Nelson Intermediate School welcomes International Students from around the world. We have a long history of enrolling students from South East Asia and Europe. Our International Students enjoy their time at Nelson Intermediate, developing their English, making friends and learning alongside our students in a diverse range of academic, sporting and cultural opportunities.
There is a relaxed and welcoming culture at Nelson Intermediate School, where teachers are focussed both on the student's well-being and on accelerating their learning. We have mixed Year 7 and 8 classes and teach to levels three and four of the New Zealand Curriculum.
Students are assigned a home room for all subjects but transition to specialist teachers for Food Technology, Hard Materials Technology, Science and Art.
Nelson Intermediate is focused on creating a positive mauri ora (sense of wellbeing) for all students. Our professional practises, in all aspects of schooling, takes into account the students cultural identity and individual circumstances.

Application Conditions
Nelson Intermediate School has agreed to observe and be bound by the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016 published by the Minister of Education. Copies of the Code are available on request from this institution or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at www.nzqa.govt.nz
In addition to the conditions listed here, all conditions that are a part of the tuition agreement with parent, the fees refund policy and other school policies also apply. Policy can be accessed via SchoolDocs.
Although an elementary level of English is desirable, no child will be refused acceptance due to their level of English, as all levels of English proficiency are catered for at Nelson Intermediate School.
Students and parents must accept and abide by rules regarding behaviour and conduct that apply to all students. Unacceptable behaviour may result in the termination of tuition.
Students must observe the Laws of New Zealand.
Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service, and can be viewed on their website at www.immigration.govt.nz. Students must observe the conditions of their Visa. If a student breaks the terms of the Visa, the school will report the fact to the New Zealand Immigration Service, which may result in the student having to leave New Zealand.
Regular attendance is expected unless prevented by illness or any other urgent cause.
Tuition may be terminated if the student fails to comply with the school rules or breaches the conditions of their Visa.
Tuition fees will be paid in full before enrolment, or before enrolment is renewed (whichever applies).
All additional costs (as outlined in the School Prospectus) will be paid promptly, as required, and conditions of the Fee Refund Policy be accepted.
INSURANCE
Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website at www.nzqa.govt.nz
The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at http://www.acc.co.nz.
International students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand. All students are required to have travel and medical insurance for the duration of their period of enrolment. It is best that the student’s family arrange insurance but proof must be provided that the insurance purchased is adequate.
All International Students must obtain an Insurance Policy that includes a Fees Protection Clause. If a student’s insurance is arranged independently, a copy of the Policy must be sent to the school before enrolment to ensure that Fees Protection Coverage is adequate.
ACCOMMODATION
As an International Student at Nelson Intermediate School, students must live with parents or legal guardians (proof must be supplied) or parents must inform the school of their address, telephone number and email address.
The student and/or parents will advise the school of any change in the contact details of the student or parents.
The student and/or parents will provide academic, medical and information that is relevant to the well-being and course placement of the student.
Fees and Applications
Tuition fees include ESOL Tuition, technology Fees
Application fee: $500.00 (incl. GST and non-refundable)
Tuition fees for Full Year: $12,400.00 (includes Government Charges & GST)
Tuition for other Periods:
$3,100.00 per term, (4 term year incl. GST)
$310.00 per week for periods less than one term of ten weeks (incl. GST)
Additional Personal Expenses
Medical/Personal insurance - approximately $650.00;
Personal living expenses - approximately $1150.00;
School Uniform - approximately $290.00;
Travel costs to and from New Zealand and any additional holiday travel within New Zealand;
The Application Fee and Tuition Fee must be received before a place is secured at Nelson Intermediate School and before you receive New Zealand Immigration Service Visa approval. You may pay your fees directly into the school bank account.
Your tuition fees for a full year will entitle you to:
Delivery of the New Zealand Curriculum and access to English lessons as required;
Full use of school facilities including textbooks for instruction;
School fees and donations.
Your fees do not include:
Other incidental expenses;
School stationery (approx. $40.00);
School uniform (approx. $290.00);
School camp (approx. $200.00).
